6.   Response to laser treatment.

Facial veins respond very well to laser treatment. Leg veins respond less predictably, but providing the right type of veins are selected for treatment and the post-treatment instructions are followed, the majority of patients will notice a significant improvement. Unfortunately, there will be a small number of patients whose leg veins may not improve with laser treatment. It is important to realise that depending on the severity and extent of the veins, it may be necessary for treatment of some areas to be repeated more than once over a period of several weeks.

Initially, the treated areas may become reddened and bruised. A raised area of skin in the line of the vein may appear soon after treatment (“Cat-Scratch”). Crusting of the treated skin may also occur rather like very localised sun-burn. Occasionally a shallow ulcer may appear which gradually heals over. It usually takes 6 to 8 weeks before the results of treatment become clear.

Being suntanned reduces the effectiveness of laser treatment. Therefore, it is an advantage if the area being treated is not suntanned before treatment.
